Step 1
Saute the onion mixture
Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil as needed. Allow the oil to warm up for 30 seconds to a minute before proceeding to the next step. Add the thinly sliced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion softens and becomes translucent. Stir in the roughly chopped garlic and cook for about 30 seconds. Stir frequently to prevent the garlic from burning; it should become fragrant but not browned. Add the drained and rinsed chickpeas to the skillet. Stir well to coat them in the oil, onions, and garlic. Let them cook for 1-2 minutes to slightly warm through. Pour in the marinara sauce and stir to combine. If the sauce seems too thick, add ¼ cup of water to thin it out slightly. Adjust the consistency to your preference.
Step 2
Broil the mixture for 2-3 minutes
Sprinkle salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste. Stir well to distribute the seasoning evenly throughout the dish. Lower the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer gently for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the skillet. This allows the flavours to meld beautifully. Once the mixture has simmered transfer the skillet to a broiler set to high heat. Broil for 2-4 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown. Keep a close eye to avoid over-browning. Remove the skillet from the broiler and let it cool for 2-3 minutes.

Garnish with basil leaves and serve warm!
